Jane Mackay grew up roaming the cow paddocks and bush of rural New Zealand, climbing over dirt mounds, fences, and stone walls. She has a BA in German Language & Literature, an MA in Journalism, and a working knowledge of Italian.

She contributes to Uphill Athlete by serving as a forum moderator. She also trains under the invaluable guidance of a coach while navigating menopause and a ruptured Baker’s cyst, with the immediate goal of running the Via Valais in September 2023.

During the lockdown in 2020, the desire to be in the mountains expanded into the desire to move swiftly and self-sufficiently through mountainous terrain. So at just about 50, as a lifelong non-athlete, Jane started running. Her training expanded further into a structured program following the Uphill Athlete methodology. One of her life goals is to spend four months walking through the Alps along the Via Alpina in 2025.
