Thank you, Nate. (and Kieth for asking the question) I had the same question. I recently pulled my lower back by trying to catch up? with the CTL to my goal. I needed to take a week off. Fortunately, the recovery is much faster. I am back on the schedule. I learned to listen to my body rather than my apps and the numbers. However, those numbers certainly motivate or remind me to work. I feel good about the improvement in my overall fitness through the training program. I hope that I am strong enough to climb on the event.

Same here. I get the same message for the March 30th meeting as Niv mentioned.
Get well soon, Matt!
I just took the Denali Expedition Prep with IMG last month. I also climbed Rainier with them. The guides are very professional and friendly. I would recommend them.
Mark, thank you! I will update my training schedule as you describe and will report back to the forum.

Hi Emanuel, my buddy and I are planning to climb from May 23rd to June 17th without a guide.
Xneab, I was recommended to take the Denali Expedition Seminar by my friend who has summited Denali without a guide and also by the Uphill Coches for the climb. I am going to take one from IMG from Feb 19th to Feb 22nd. I have done a fair amount of winter mountaineering in the North West. But, nothing in the scale of Denali.
Thank you so much for your reply, Mark. I pushed for a group tent as well for the weight and the setting up. But, I do not want to stress my mentor/partner as well. Besides, most of our trip has been less than a week. So, it may be wise to listen to him and respect each other’s space. I take your advice on the hybrid system. We are going to bring Arai tent, which is like BD FIrstlight. I will look into one bombproof tent. It is always exciting to get a new toy.

Thank you for sharing the article! I remember we touched on this topic during the zoom meeting. But, I missed or did not know/understand hrTSS “Fudge Factors”. Also, it clarified the concepts of using CTL and TSS a little more. Thank you.

Does she set the goal for her weight/BMI before the trip? Why?
A food plan for Denali will be helpful. Daily Calories. What not to bring. Do we really need to carry a frying pan? lol What type of real food do you carry? What do you eat before the summit day or alpine start morning and etc?
In my culture, the diet is carbohydrate-heavy, has less protein, and has more vegetables compared to the western diet. I try to eat a balanced meal. It seems to be everything that I read and hear is a bit too extreme and stressful how we restrict diet. But, if it’s really beneficial I certainly love to try.
kazu.ishidera on November 22, 2021 at 9:35 pm · in reply to: Planning 2021 winter training climbs for Denali #59651Hi Nate,
Thank you so much for your comprehensive answer. It gave me a good idea. I will think through my training plan with my priorities.
I have already decided to join the IMG Denali expedition seminar. I try to narrow down the dates to join a seminar. Thus, I asked the question.
My partner/mentor and I are going to climb without a guide. (I will look for you Matt or please look for two Japanese climber teams) My focus should be on fitness. We have climbed more technical climbs in the past. But, the altitude, very cold weather, heavy load, length, and expedition tactics are all new. So, I tried to figure out the best plan. This process is half of the fun I suppose. Now that you suggested I can train and snowshoe up with a load in Tahoe or Yosemite in winter. I should think more creatively to make my workouts combine with outings as well.
Thank you again. This forum has been so helpful.

Thank you so much, Nate! That’s exactly what I was looking for. I realized my typo on topic.
Hi all!
I live in Redwood City, the SF Bay Area. I’m planning to climb West Buttress of Denali in May/June 2022 and will climb Rainier prior to Denali. I’m looking for training partners, too.
