Hi Jean, I sometimes do my own electrolyte option adding some salt and concentrated syrup (the kind that you might use to dilute and drink as a fruit “squash”) which also works well for me!

Hi Alyssa, thanks so much for this! I’m still a bit confused about AeT + AnT and pacing! When you say “in AeT”, I’m assuming that means below the threshold right?
When I did the AnT test as part of our current training plan, I got 170 HR. In March, I did a skimo event which took just under 4 hours and I had an average HR of 168… so pretty close to AnT but for multiple hours. Is that weird ?
I have a trail run event coming up this Saturday (17th) and am wondering how to pace it. When I run at or below AeT, it’s pretty slow /doesn’t feel like I’m pushing much (I know that’s somewhat to be expected). Based on your reply above, I’m thinking I would aim to go at around 150 (my AeT) for majority of the event even if it feels pretty slow/ I could be going quicker and then pick up the pace further into the event? or would you suggest adjusting based on the AnT info above? I’m still wondering if I have the right number for my AeT!
thanks!
Hi everyone,
Thanks for starting this thread! I’m Ruth and I’m based between Gryon and Geneva, Switzerland. I’m originally from the Scottish Highlands.
I’ve always been a mountain lover and am keen to get into some more events etc this year. I did my first skimo event earlier this year and am signed up to my first trail run event this weekend! I also do some easy mountaineering and road biking in the summers and lots of ski mountaineering/touring in the winters + cross-country skiing (classic + skate).
Great to meet you all! RuthThank you! Does it matter if we go a bit above at times or should we be strict about staying below AeT? For e.g. today I was out and mostly below AeT but sometimes it was going up into 160s when I was climbing uphill then would notice and try to bring it down again..
Also I’m wondering for events – how would you recommend to pace in relation to AeT and AnT for an event I’m expecting to take somewhere in the 4-5ish hour range for?
same here for the RPE table – would be great to see!
OK thanks!
cool good to know – thank you!

Thanks Alyssa, really appreciate your reply! one more update / question – I did the 1hr10 min “aerobic day” workout today (20 mins @3-4 RPE, 40 mins @4-6 RPE, 10 mins @3-5 RPE). I just did based on perceived effort (as recommended by Alexa in the WhatsApp chat) so wasn’t looking at heart rate. Looking at it now, I averaged 159 heart rate for the 40 mins middle section at 4-6 RPE… which felt fine and sustainable. So am wondering if I my AeT is higher than I aimed for in the test… any thoughts?

I’m also unsure about my AeT 🙂 I first did the test a couple of years ago then in March (16th) and now again yesterday. I aimed for 151 in March and it came out as 5.8% so I thought a bit high but now I know from last night’s call how to show only segments in Training Peaks (thanks Alyssa!) for e.g. 51 mins is coming out at 3.64%. For the one I did yesterday (which I aimed for 148), for e.g. 42 mins in the middle is reading 3.68%. I can usually comfortably maintain around a heart rate in the 150-55 range for several hours. 148 felt like I could have a continuous conversation without being short on breath.
Also to note for yesterday’s one, I was trying to find flat ground for longer than anticipated so probably ended up in the “warm up” for more like 30-35 mins than 15 mins prior to the hour test.
I’d really appreciate guidance to pin down my AeT!
