Thanks Mark. I’ll let you know when I can hit a Double C.

May I those thoughts. If I do NOT sign up for session 2 it will not be because of any dissatisfaction with session 1 but because life got in the way. Thanks for your time and your health. If some of the stuff a guy in a black bath robe did to me resolves I’ll be in session 2, otherwise I’ll buy one of the programs and proceed “privately.”
Thanks Mark. Hood is not for a warm-up but another objective. I’m a state highpointer who should have done the harder ones 40 years ago. My wife and I conquered mighty Britton Hill, FL (el. 345 ft), that state’s highpoint, without supplemental oxygen nor even crampons a few years back.
Hood on the way home is a pretty good thought. I especially appreciate the 5 day “break” advice – definitely what I’m looking for. I hope I can make it a week.
I live at about 80 feet ($10,000,000 away from 0 feet). My NW buds are all close to sea level also so acclimatization is definitely a problem. I’ll just have to do my best with the time allotted- definitely a problem for all humans.
It does depend. Going slow in my case on Hood would be good – I’m a multi-speed model – slow, slower, slowest, collapsed. The good thing about Hood is I’ll do it with a guide or guides and I’ll probably take the “tractor assist” the night before to the Silcox Hut, resulting in “only” about 3300 feet of gain. Still non-trivial for someone with my skill set.
As for Rainier my plan is to try to hit a weather/snow conditions window. I’ll be doing a private trip with a former RMI guide and his super fit dad. Guide has about 50 ascents, dad 3 maybe 4. They live in the area and if I decide to attempt Hood first I’ll drive and if not I’ll probably fly – from LAX. If I have the time I’d prefer to drive as I can easily couch surf all the way to the Canadian border and then my wife can come along and bind up my wounds.
The plan is to hike to Muir and spend a night, climb to the Ingraham Glacier and spend a night, go to the summit and, depending, either stay at Muir again or go all the way out. The biggest negative is the extra weight. It’s a work in progress – we’re probably aiming at early June.
MalibuBill on January 4, 2022 at 10:25 am · in reply to: mountaineering training group, round two questions #61540I do not recall if I received an offer or not but I successfully signed up (https://uphillathlete.com/shop/) for round 2 this morning (1/4/2022). You may use my nickname “Lucky” if you wish as I have been reminded that I’ll miss the initial Feb 09 zoom call because I’m having a colonoscopy that day. “All things considered I’d rather be in Hanalei”- with apologies to W C Fields
Thanks Nate. My particular strap has a monitor that is mechanically suspect – it’s not a design problem, but a wear problem. I’ll get one for swimming. I’ve now checked and the Garmin Forerunneer 245 is rated to 5 ATM meaning it should withstand the short course (25 yd) pool. So far my $10 Timex has been waterproof but all I use it for is to check the time in case I have an early appointment. It will be interesting to see if I have to swim slower (more than one of my wonderful cohorts in that activity would advise you that might not be possible) to maintain an HR at the level needed for this course.
I do appreciate your encouraging remarks. I HAVE called myself a mountaineer in the past and still do. After all, I have only 14 8k peaks to complete.
Art Muir is the most impressive and inspirational Muir since John. I’ve been aware of Art for some time but have not yet read his story. He’s way beyond weekend warrior, obviously.
Thanks again for the encouragement and all your time you’ve devoted to me and the others.
First, I want to thank the coaches for referring to all of us, even me, as athletes. I’ll be 75 in June and I assure you I’ve never “heard” myself, in that 3/4 of a century, so characterized before. For good reasons. I appreciate it.
I swim 3 mornings/week – actually it would be better characterized as being in the pool at the same time as some real swimmers who are LA County beach lifeguards with resting HRs in the 30s and I usually manage around 70% (2100-2300 yards short course) of what they’re able to do (2800-3000). I suspect that neither the chest strap monitor I was given nor the damn watch I bought (I’m getting better with it) are truly water tight so cannot even guess as to my HR while in the pool.
I know it may not be much to go on but is this swimming likely to interfere with the progress I hope to make in this course?
Thanks again coaches. My tech frustration does not apply in any way to you guys.
You’re on Don. Thanks.
And, MAF is it until I figure out the watch better. That works out to 105.6.
Thanks Nate. Other “students” should understand my frustration is simply with the electronics. You and your mates have been most helpful.
The Santa Monica Mountains are 100 feet from where I am seated. My parents and I were friends of Milt McCauley who wrote the guidebook for those mountains. I’ll refer to it – again.
I grew up in the shadow of the San Gabriels and spent many happy hours in them before moving to the beach – traffic makes that range MUCH less appealing than when I lived in the Pasadena area almost 50 years ago.
THANKS AGAIN. I WILL make this work – with your continuing kind assistance!
Thanks Don. I’m at a pretty low fitness level, which I at least partially blame on the pandemic, which also closed the local pool besides my gym, but I’ll be happy to hike one of the more moderate trails. The old “Chumash” trail across from the Pt. Mugu shooting range used to feel “private” for us but is now packed daily.
I’ve checked out my “old” not in Malibu gym a couple of times which is free for us old farts and Malibu Fitness, which is not free as well as a couple others but all seem to be more careless about the virus than I prefer.
As for early Dec Rosemary and I will be suffering on Kauai from 11/28 to 12/8 but otherwise I’ll be around. :>) Yes I will risk being on a plane.
Thanks again.
Is there some way to get the December and January workouts into Outlook (desktop version) on my computer? November got there somehow using the .ics web link on TP but trying that link again did nothing at all.
I’m hoping the workouts will show up for Dec and Jan – somehow Nov DID manage to be installed.
MalibuBill on November 15, 2021 at 2:06 pm · in reply to: Cham Fit & Mobility Workouts – Sync with Garmin #59361Thanks Nate and Edgar. I was in an area with no signal of any kind – even the rangers’ short wave radios do not work there. Very pleasant actually. I don’t have a smart phone so it seems the app won’t do me any good. Unfortunately I was off line by the time I saw the advice.
I’d already downloaded the calendar to outlook, eventually forcing TP to do it by brute force.
But, THANKS AGAIN
MalibuBill on November 11, 2021 at 9:25 am · in reply to: Cham Fit & Mobility Workouts – Sync with Garmin #59180Is there any way to download the Chamonix Fit workouts to a laptop? Today I’ll be traveling to an area where I will spend the weekend with no cell nor wifi signal. Hard to find such a place but worth it. :>) I might drive into a nearby town tomorrow morning where I can park near a store and poach a wifi signal to download the workout
