I am starting to train for a Fall trail Marathon in Oct 2020 and wanted to ask about water running. I am starting to to follow a basic program again and as I am a bit heavy and worry about the pounding and extra weight. What are the thoughts on this as either an alternative to running while I lose the weight or cross training?

Water running can be great when injured. But if you hope to run you need to start using weight bear activities. Hiking, inclined treadmill walking, stair machines are all viable alternatives to running as you lose some weight. If you need to add 1-2 sessions of pool running per week that’s fine but I really recommend using these other methods as your dominate training modality.

Yes, I plan to power walk/hike both outside on the treadmill when weather deems it.
