Phil Maffetone could well be called the “prophet of Zone 2”.  He’s been writing, speaking and coaching the importance of aerobic base since the early 1980s.  During  a chance meeting with Phil in 1984 Uphill Athlete co-founder Scott Johnston was first exposed to the importance of low intensity training.  In this episode, Scott talks with Phil, originator of the concept of aerobic deficiency. In this discussion they trace the arc of Scott’s training philosophy from that chance meeting in 1984 to the current Uphill Athlete training methodology.

Phil Maffetone on The Drive Podcast

There has been a recent and long overdue renewed interest in aerobic base training often referred to as Zone 2 training. Well known podcaster  Peter Attia, MD recently interviewed Phil Maffetone on his podcast, The Drive. Our own Scott Johnston first spoke with Maffetone in the mid 1980ss and the photo here is of the brochure Scott kept from Phil’s practice at that time. Maffetone has been highly influential on the endurance coaching community and this podcast, which traces the development of his thinking, is well worth a listen!
