Thanks very much for the feedback, Scott! Wow, I had no idea it would make such a difference with a dead hang. Regarding the shoulder retraction, is there a video link that you know of that shows the motion from relaxed shoulder hang to retracted shoulder blades? Are my arms straight during this process, or bent at the elbows? Thanks again!
Thanks, Scott! I’m very interested to see how my heart rate fluctuates this time. The last time I was in the Himalaya 3 years ago, I got up to 5,800 m and measured a maximum heart rate probably ~95% of my max that particular day. But then, I did not really train for that trip the way I’m doing so now (i.e. keeping my pace at/below AeT).

Marin Avenue in Berkeley, with about 16.5% grade for about 650′.
Thank you, rachelp!

I think with the heel touch I will have to find the right weight. I can do 28 lbs for the right leg without problem, but with similar weight for the left leg, my right leg lands with a thud and all the weight gets on the ball of my left foot and consequently shin pain. With no weight it seems ok. I’ll just have to experiment a bit and slowly progress.
What’s a good way to warm up for max strength pull ups if you don’t have access to an assisted pull up machine or a row machine? I’m asking because I recently installed a pull up bar in my garage.
Scott, please ignore my question – I’m seeing a lot of your responses from other threads in the forum, so I get the idea.
Hi Scott,
In case I want to repeat this test, is the AeT the average heart rate for the first half of the 1 hour test (assuming the heart rate drift stays within 5% between the first vs second half).
Thanks,

I think that worked! I was able to do a step up with the full weight by starting further back from the box (i.e. large angle at the knee). A video of each leg at
Now, I only have the shin pain when I do the heel touch with my right foot (i.e. putting my weight on the left leg while going straight down and up). Is there a possible fix for this (side step)? Again, the right leg is fine and I can probably go higher in weight there.
Thanks again!!
Cheers,
