Timberline Trail is a good one with lots of options.

Zig Zag Mountain(s) has good views as does Tom Dick and Harry Mt.

Cooper Spur Trail from the ski area would give you great views and good vertical.

There’s some great trail runs on the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge and you can put together some solid vertical but I’m not sure if all the trails are open after the fire a couple years ago.

If you’re in the city, head to Forest Park.

I was not able to touch my toes for my first 20-odd years. By my late-20s I was able finally able to get there. I did it with foam rolling (hamstrings, quads, calves, IT band, glutes), full ROM movements under load (butt-to-heels squats, single leg DL, RDLs, etc.), and dynamic stretching.

Due to some knee injuries, I no longer do heavy deep squats but I still do the rest along with unweighted (body weight) deep squats and I’ve started doing yoga, which has been great! At this point, my glutes, hips, and calves that are relatively more tight than my hamstrings.

Looking back, though, I don’t think my tight hamstrings were limiting me at all, it was partly just my own desire to be able to touch my toes.

For aerobic training days, do feet “climbed” on a treadmill, with the belt moving underfoot, count the same as feet climbed outdoors? Or should treadmill “vertical” be scaled up to see similar benefits to doing that session outside?

Land: I’ve spent a lot of time whitewater rafting and kayaking and, in my experience, the only dry bags that are truly dry are Watershed bags which have a zip-lock type closure but are pretty expensive. Most roll-top style bags will leak a bit through the top roll but if you roll it correctly the leakage should be minimal. If you have anything else in your pack that is critical to stay dry (e.g. phone, key fob) you should probably put it in a zip-lock sandwich bag just to be safe.

I have had similar experiences with my Suunto HRM and asked about it on this forum a while back. After doing a lot of Googling and some experimenting I figured out that static from my shirt was causing the inaccurate (abnormally high) reading. I was running at a pretty slow pace any my HR was showing extremely high. I pulled my shirt away from my chest and the displayed HR dropped. I let go of my shirt and it went back up. I finally took my shirt off and got reasonable readings for the rest of my run. The same happened on a road bike ride a week ago.

I’ve noticed it only happens with some of my running shirts, depending on the material. From what I’ve read, getting the strap completely wet can help prevent the buildup of static as can rubbing your shirt and strap with an anti-static drier sheet, but I haven’t tried that one yet.

Hi Scott,

Thanks for the quick reply. On Monday I ran on a treadmill a the gym and had the same thing happen with my HR monitor so I additionally used a HR monitor that the gym has and found out that mine was not giving accurate readings. I’ll try washing it and if that doesn’t help get a new strap.
