Wow, this is great! Thanks so much for fully explaining this. I’ll incorporate this in a few more weeks once I feel that I have a really good base and proper strength. Thanks!

Emese Foss on December 16, 2021 at 7:38 pm · in reply to: taking a long (30 mins or more) break during the hiking workout #60891Hi, 2 questions:
1) I’m in the intermediate group and I see that there’s a 2.5 hour with weight hike for this weekend. For this, I’m thinking of hiking up a local mountain with elevation gain of about 3,500 ft. If I do the full 2.5 hours uphill, I’ll still have about a 1.5 hour walk back to the car retracing my steps with weight in my pack. Is this too much at this stage of training? I’m wondering if I should do 1.5 hours up, turn around at that point regardless of how high I am, and get back to the car at the 2.5 hour mark. Thoughts?
2) As I will continue training through the winter and slowly add time to my long hikes, I will eventually need to incorporate a meal stop into my workout. This will probably be about 1/2 hour long. How does this stop affect endurance training? Would it be better to take 10 minute breaks every hour instead? I personally find that the longer lunch break is very refreshing and allows me to continue for many more hours. BTW, I’ll be building up pack weight to eventually carry about 30% of body weight. Thanks, Emese
Hi, I am also going to start training for high altitude events this winter for spring and summer mountain trips. As I’m almost 60, I find that my Zone 2 heart rate is lower compared to younger athletes, which puts my pace a little slower than them. I’m concerned that when roped for glacier travel, I will need to move faster than my preferred pace. Is there any specific tweaking I can do with my training to try to make up for this difference? Thanks, Emese

I’d like the program to calculate that extra effort, and not just think that it’s a regular hike. Is there a way to do that? Thanks, Emese

Perfect, thanks. I’ve been keeping my HR within the Zone 2 HR numbers and will keep it up. Thanks!
Emese Foss on October 21, 2021 at 6:55 pm · in reply to: Questions About The Cham Fit Program #58355Hi, I have another question about the Cham Fit program. I’ve been doing Level 1 without using my workout watch. Once I’m finished with the hour long work out, I manually enter the 1 hour into the time slot on the calendar. Is that okay, or should I use my watch and merge the data from the workout into the calendared item? Thanks, Emese
Hi, my name is Emese (pronounced Emma-sha) and I’m from Berkeley, CA. For the last few years, I spend spring, summer and fall in the Transylvanian region of Romania where I have a high end immersive agritourism guesthouse with organic farm.
I started mountaineering and rock climbing in the early 1990’s, along with other extreme sports like mountain biking, white water kayaking, windsurfing and racing 2 person sail boats. I’ve been on backcountry ski patrol since 2002. Very prolific climbing on the West Coast, as well as internationally. I’ve slowed down a bit (turning 60 this March), now concentrating on mountaineering, backpacking, hiking, etc. I used the New Alpinism book as a guide for training for big mountains starting in 2015, so familiar with the program, but wanted to get the most current info and try out a coached training program. I haven’t been too active in mountaineering lately as I took a bad step on a steep ice patch on Denali in 2017. My crampons held, but my ankle twisted, down I went with a 65 lbs pack, and ended up with 3 broken bones in my right ankle. (No, no helicopter rescue, but there was a lot of butt scooting before getting to terrain appropriate for a sled.) Recovery was quick but now I’m a scaredy cat on very steep slopes. 🙂
My goal for summer 2022 is to climb Mt. Blanc and the Matterhorn. Looking forward to getting back in shape and getting out in the mountains!

Hi, another question for you . . . I did the Zone 1 and 2 exercise today and it successfully uploaded onto TrainingPeaks. I’m wondering how to integrate the results into today’s workout calendar event for this exercise. Would you have time on tomorrow’s call to go through that process on your shared screen if a written response on this forum is too complicated? Thanks Emese
Hi, I’m taking a sneak peek to the workouts this week and have a question about the Wednesday workout. There’s reference to RPE with numbers next to it. What does this mean? Thanks, Emese
