Unfortunately this isn’t about Hermann Buhl’s epic meth-fueled descent of Nanga Parbat, but about a college student in over his head with math classes.

I’m currently in the transition period getting ready for a summer of peak bagging, bushwhacking, and technical alpine climbing, focusing my training mostly on my weak point which is aerobic endurance. That being said, I am in classes and have ADHD, so I take an as-needed prescription of Vyvance.

One of the noticeable effects of vyvance is an increase in heart rate. I have already confirmed with my primary physician that it is safe for me to exercise after taking vyvance, but am curious about the effect it would have on my heart rate zones or if much research has even been put into this in the first place?

I usually run in the mornings and take vyvance afterwards, but on days like today where I’ve slept in, I’m curious about whether my workouts will be less effective since I must maintain a slower pace in order to stay situated below AeT. Is elevating the heartrate to zone 2 sufficient aerobic training in and of itself or do other physiological stresses need to be present? Thank you!

Thank you! I did end up going for a z2 run yesterday and I did a pretty good job of keeping below AeT, though I did go above a few times. Today I did a recovery run which was frustrating because I found myself going as far as into z3 when walking insanely slow up hills, but I guess that’s a sign of pretty rough ADS. I thought I’d be immune since I’m 20 and a long time runner/climber, but this is a good reminder to keep my ego in check. I’ll stick with it. Thank you!

So is limited decoupling a sign that you aren’t near AeT? I sent three of my tests to the coach email and was told my AeT is around 144. I had one test averaging around ~160 that was entirely flat and I’m wonndering why that didnt factor into the discussion at all. I’m not doubting that my AeT is 144, just wondering why my higher HR test wouldn’t factor into it.

Thank you both for your responses. I’ll be sure to stick with it. It seems like that will have to involve saying goodbye to hilly runs for now. As I gradually improve my AeT will there be any easily observable indications? I imagine it might just involve doing semi regular heartrate drift tests? Thank you so much!

Awesome, thank you for your help!

Thank you for this reply, this cleared some stuff up. I imagine that there is a fairly large range of paces that could be considered to be well under AeT. Say I am going at snails pace and am certainly within aerobic intensity, would that not produce a different heart rate than a pace that is at the very top of my aerobic threshold?

My fear is that if I’m not running right below my AeT (which I dont know yet) then I wont get an accurate result of this test. Am I completely misunderstanding how this works?
