Thanks everyone! I’ve bookmarked the fudge factors article, and plan to redo my AeT. Apparently I went up the Muir snowfield in Zone 4 on Sunday… what? LOL.

Looks like I have a new AeT test in my future! Thank you all, this really helps. It definitely seems that my zone settings are off. It really helps to “talk it out” with fellow likeminded folks.

This particular climb shows 665 TSS. The Female Uphill Athlete group told us to add a certain # per pound to that, and I cannot for the life of me remember how much?
Thank you!Melissa Macdonald on June 27, 2022 at 11:40 am · in reply to: Training Peaks, “New Threshold met” – crazy high HR #68583Good point. In a strange turn of luck, I lost my HRM and ordered a new one arriving today! I’ll def. test again with the new one. Thank you!!
I totally get this. I read an article last year or so and it kindof does go along with the “just do it” mentality, but it really helped me put Motivation in perspective (yes, capital M!) We each have a goal, a climb, a race, whatever the case may be. And we have training to do to work towards that. The thing is, I don’t have to be jazzed and happy every time I go out on a training hike. Sometimes I think we turn being “Motivated” into being fist-pumping, “Let’s ROCK THIS, whooo hooo!!” mentality. It’s not that at all. I do The Things (in this case, training) because I’m committed to my goal, whether I’m motivated to do it or not, or I should say, even if I’m NOT motivated.
Last year I had one last training hike – carrying 40# uphill, 4000′ elevation gain in 2 miles. Crazy steep. I sat in the parking lot and cried. I did not want to do it. I put my pack on finally and just said, “I am not motivated to do this. I don’t want to do this. But am committed to my goal, therefore I must go”. Cried the whole way up. (Did I mention the torrential Washington rainstorm yet?) I just kept repeating that mantra “Because I’m committed”. Also, I think of motivated as an emotion/mentality, and committed as an action.
So now instead of looking at it as being Motivated, I change that out to being Committed. Hope that helps a bit.

Melissa Macdonald on February 14, 2022 at 7:32 pm · in reply to: AeT Test, clearly a dumb question #63330Yes, it’s from my Wahoo chest strap, uploaded directly to TP. 10% incline, steady pace – did not change speed at all. My HR does seem to move around a bit. Here’s the strange part (and hence my confusion over getting this right…) For 2 of the tests I did last Spring, my HR actually decreased! I had a negative drift. Maybe I’m just a weirdo. :-0
Melissa Macdonald on February 11, 2022 at 6:28 pm · in reply to: AeT Test, clearly a dumb question #63251Here’s my stats, the start HR for part one was 146, ending at 148. The AVERAGE for part one was 140, average for part 2 was 142. Both of those were only an increase of 1.369% and 1.42% respectively. So is 146 below my AeT? Should I do it again and start at a faster pace?
Thank you anyone and everyone for your help!

I was surprised that the HR flattened out in the mid 110’s too. Maybe I should have pushed harder. It felt like I was going pretty hard (5-6 level of hard). I think I might have psyched myself out that I (think) have a pretty big aerobic deficiency so that might have messed with my head. Maybe I’m actually fitter than I think I am! LOL, wouldn’t that be great?
I will run the test again at a higher HR. And I definitely don’t feel a thing today, so it will be easy to do again.
Thank you!
