Altitude Training | Uphill Athlete

Why we go to altitude

The hardest moments at altitude are usually preparation moments, not summit moments. The race that fell apart at mile 70 because the pace that felt comfortable at 8,000 feet became impossible at 11,000. The acclimatization rotation that left you feeling worse than the first cycle. The trip you trained for that turned into a battle with sleep, food, and a body that could not recover. None of that is bad luck. It is preparation that did not match what altitude asks for. It can be coached.

Uphill Athlete has coached mountain athletes through altitude for over a decade, from first-time Leadville finishers to Everest summit teams to athletes preparing for all fourteen 8000-meter peaks. We are partnered with Hypoxico, the standard in altitude simulation equipment, and our coaching is individualized to your objective, your physiology, and your timeline. Acclimatization is complex and highly individual: the timing of exposure, the simulated sleeping altitude, the simulated training altitude, and the resulting blood-oxygen response are all individual variables. We coach the protocol that fits your body and your trip, not a generic plan.

Thinking about training?

There are two ways to start..
A consult call with a coach is the right first step when you have a specific altitude question: acclimatization timing, race pacing, training adjustments, whether hypoxic conditioning is right for your timeline, or what to do differently after a previous altitude trip. One session, focused on the question you bring.
Hypoxic Conditioning Coaching is the right path when you want to pre-acclimatize from home before the mountain or a high-altitude race. Partnered with Hypoxico, individualized, daily-monitored. The protocol covers exposure timing, simulated sleeping altitude, simulated training altitude, and the work of building the blood-oxygen response that decides how your body adapts. Limited availability.
If you are not sure which one fits, start with the consult. Your coach will tell you honestly which is right.
Altitude is also a medical environment. Pre-existing conditions that may be affected by altitude warrant a conversation with your doctor or a altitude medicine specialist alongside the coaching. Your UA coach will flag when this matters.

Training is more than just working out.

Our evidence-based approach looks beyond exercise alone. It accounts for sleep, stress, nutrition, and the demands of real life while progressively building sport-specific fitness on top of base aerobic endurance.

This methodology has helped thousands of people move better, last longer, and go farther. From Everest summits to first finish lines, the principles are the same.
If you’re ready to build true mountain fitness, this is where it begins.
