Determining AeT…

    Hi,

I did an AeT test last week and got an 7.5% pa:HR, so decided to do it again today. These are the URLs:

AeT test done on June 7, 2020:

After the first AeT test, I did Week 1 of the 24-week Mountaineering Plan and then did the second AeT test today. Both AeT tests were done outside on relatively flat terrain and I was running at a comfortable aerobic pace each time. However, my watch showed my HR today to be quite a bit higher than last week. Also, I got notification from TP that my new threshold HR is 152 when, after last week’s test, it was 148.

Could you please take a look at my URLs and let me know if I am doing this properly, since this is such an important test? Also, could the fact that my threshold was higher in today’s AeT test mean that I am seeing the benefits of the Mountaineering Plan (I have only done one week of it) or could it be my Garmin watch didn’t record the HR accurately this time around? Could you guys help me interpret the results of both AeT tests and let me know if I need to do one again?

    Thanks so much!

There are no days provisioned for AnT tests and subsequent AeT and AnT tests, like there is for the very first AeT test. When I do these tests periodically, can I substitute them for aerobic tests in the Plan or should I do them in addition to them?

Ok. I did the same thing. I didn’t wait long enough for my heart rate to stabilize but I think I have 48 minutes of usable data.

Can you confirm that using 145 is ok? That is the average heart rate for 48 minutes with the first 24 at 141 and the second 24 minutes at 148.

This was on a treadmill at steady pace and incline. I did not touch the dial! I can’t account for my Garmins odd speeds. I did wear a chest strap.

    Thanks

When should I do the AnT test

After at least two days of easy recovery sessions. You want to be well-rested to get the best result.

how often should I do both these tests

It depends on where you are in your development. If you have ADS, then they don’t have to be done very often, because the prescription is always the same: Train AMAP under AeT and under-estimating AeT is never a disadvantage.

However, if your AnT / AeT gap is close (less than 10%), and especially if it’s 5-7%, then you may want to test more often for a specific goal event. For example, one of my runners has a gap of only 6%, so we test every four to six weeks. However, at his level, he won’t see any change in HR, only in speed. So what we’re testing for is improvements in AeT speed.

how close to each other should the tests be as far as timeframe

Again, it depends on what you’re training for. The important thing is to be recovered for each test.

Thanks, Scott! I’m pretty sure I do have ADS since I had been doing high intensity interval training and running in Zones 3 and higher, so won’t do the AnT test just yet, since the goal is to train under AeT and try to raise it. Thanks so much!!!
