Begin your expedition
With the best chance for success in the high mountains.
I was fortunate to have a long acclimatization plan, and we felt the main advantage would be to use the tent so I could recover and adapt faster along the basecamp trail. The main aim was to avoid illnesses such as the Khumbu cough or GI upset on the way up. I had poor sleep with the tent, so I appreciated using it at the end of training when strength training was winding down.
With the tent, I was able to acclimatize to 5500m before my trip. Everyone else in my group and accompanying trekkers had some form of AMS symptoms or became ill with some aspect of a Khumbu cough or GI upset. I avoided this and was grateful for Martin’s insight and planning, which led to a successful summit.
