Super helpful, Scott, thanks – makes sense. I did the first iteration of sprints and it was good! So will keep working on that.

I was also thinking I might carry 10 kilos of cookies up a hill and then eat all the cookies at the top. I will report back if this yields good results!

Scott – this is helpful, thank you.

In terms of editing the Foote plan – for instance, are the bolded words correct below? (This is from the LT test day) I thought that if delta between AeT and AnT was MORE than 10%, you need MORE Z1?

If the difference between AeT and ANT is 10% or less, you will need to reduce the amount of Z2 training and substitute more Z1 for your aerobic base training or you will run the risk of overtraining by running too fast (Z2) too much of the time. If the spread between AeT and AnT is more than 10% then do all of your aerobic base training in Z2. In this case; redo the AeT test that you did on day 1 every few weeks to monitor improvements in your aerobic base as measured by the AeT. As your aerobic base improves and your AeT HR and pace move upward you will need to adjust the volume of Z2 down.

This makes complete sense – thanks!

@Scott Semple – no, you are right, it is HR zones. By “running” zones – I meant the 7 Friel HR zones for running on Training Peaks (the auto set).

It’s funny, I usually jack up the pace on the first interval intentionally to get my HR into the zone as quickly as possible during that first interval (I figured that was better???). But yeah, it gets there much more quickly on latter ones.

So maybe keep the pace at a consistent level to get the HR into the zone by the middle to end of 4 min interval on the first one and see what happens if I keep it there for the rest without creeping in to Z5.

    Super helpful, thanks!

Thanks Scott – this is interesting.

So to be clear, I can complete the workout in terms of getting to Z4 for the required time – the issue is that in the last few I end up going over and into Z5 (I use the Friel running zones from TP based on my AeT).

Based on the fact that I can get the work done but just at a higher heart rate makes me think this is more of an aerobic issue than a muscular one. What do you think?

I am well familiar with 30/30s from Nordic and look forward to Sam’s article! I understand Kilian prefers to do them for 3 hours!

That completely makes sense, thanks. So something closer to the initial max strength workouts in the initial stages of the Skimo program or maybe even something with some dynamic movements like Verkoshanskys? (Sam had given me some of these as part of a training program for PDG last year so may implement those again.)

Is this true for the advanced 16 week training program too? It seems to end with a race? But still no on-snow training? (I have just been using skiing in lieu of running for workouts when I can, particularly striding.) This seems like a very important but maybe not clear point?

    Bingo, thanks

Thanks Scott – that does make a lot of sense generally.
