    Hi sgw,

    To share my own experience, I ran my first road marathon a few years ago with only around 6 weeks of training and it was the most painful running experience of my life. Over the last 15km I was just trying not to cry lol. In hindsight, I had a great time but I was risking injury, especially since I had no previous running history.

    That being said, if you have been maintaining between 30-50km/week you can probably survive a 50km ultra if your goal is finishing as opposed to performance. Not sure I’d recommend it but I’ve seen worse. Are there any other upcoming events you can properly train for, perhaps in September or October?

    Thanks @L-Tregan, I appreciate that insight! I agree with the need for M/E workouts. Just as a bit of background, I use M/E workouts in base training for all of my training cycles – they are magic – and yes, with a career and a family it takes a lot of planning to hit a peak week of 140km but in my experience it’s been doable.

    My main concern is that, even though my mileage is high, I’m splitting anything over 100km/week into 9 or more runs, with my longest continuous run at only 2-3 hours, and I’m worried that that strategy will come back to bite me in the ass when I do longer races.

    I like the Salomon sense pro 4 or s/lab sense series for scrambling on gnarlier terrain on Vancouver’s North Shore. Super sticky rubber, sensitive, very good on technical terrain. Plus, if they’re good enough for Kilian they’re good enough for me.

    Thanks for the advice Bruno and Steve! It may just take some patience over the next couple weeks until I’m cleared to start swimming. Looking forward to experimenting with some of your suggestions.
