Communicating and Analyzing Your Workouts
We rely on TrainingPeaks as the basis of our communications about what training you will do—the daily workouts—as well as its analysis tools to track your progress. The TrainingPeaks platform is an incredibly powerful tool: it is the foundation of what makes remote coaching work so well. If you are interested, you may read this article for more information why we use TrainingPeaks.
Setting Up a TrainingPeaks Account
To this end, you will need to execute two steps:
1) Set up a trainingpeaks.com athlete account if you don’t already have one. Note: Do NOT upgrade to Premium because that is included as part of your fee for coaching with Uphill Athlete. They will send you many notifications to upgrade, but please ignore them.
2) Link your TrainingPeaks athlete account to our coaching account by clicking this link with your TrainingPeaks account open in the same browser.
Heart Rate and GPS Training Watch for Tracking and Recording Your Workouts
You will need to have a watch that will track your heart rate with a chest strap and track your distance, elevation, and pace data with a GPS. Most commonly this means using a Suunto, Polar, Garmin, Cior similar brand training watch with a heart rate strap.
Note that we are adamant about the use of heart rate straps. The wrist-top heart rate recording technology is simply not accurate enough for training purposes.
The Coros Vertix, Garmin Forerunner, Garmin Fenix series, and Suunto watches are the most common devices Uphill Athletes use.
If you need to do some shopping, try either Outdoor Gear Lab or DCRainMaker.com which both offer excellent product reviews.
If you’re (understandably) hesitant to buy a $500 watch, and want to use your smartphone, there are options for bluetooth-enabled heart rate straps that can work with a GPS-enabled smartphone. The Wahoo TICKR (and its app) is the most common, and most reliable, bluetooth enabled heart-rate chest strap we’ve encountered, and these devices cost around $50.
Before you buy something, it’s smart to make sure it works with TrainingPeaks. Here is a full list of devices TrainingPeaks is compatible with, and it is extensive! But it does not cover fitness trackers, so make sure to consult the list.
Once you get your new watch, or if you already have one, you will need to register the watch and create an account. Suunto has Movescount; Garmin has Connect; Polar’s app is called Flow; etc. Coros is unique because the do it all through their excellent phone app.
Finally, you have to give your TrainingPeaks account permission to talk to your Coros/Movescount/Connect/Flow account. This is easy and really only requires being logged into both accounts and clicking a permission link. Here are instructions for:
Once our Director of Coaching has matched you with a coach you will be introduced to that coach and sent a link to set up a recurring monthly payment. You’ll need to complete payment before coaching begins.
